Wellbeing and Mental Health Support
A child’s emotional wellbeing affects their academic achievement as well as their future success and satisfaction in later life. Current evidence demonstrates that mental health and wellbeing programmes in schools, can lead to significant improvements in children’s mental health and social and emotional skills. It is also thought that effective wellbeing provision in schools can lead to reductions in classroom misbehaviour and bullying.
It is for these reasons that physical and mental wellbeing are at the heart of our school ethos. Here at Kettering Park Junior Academy, we are committed to helping our students build resilience, learn strategies to support their own emotional wellbeing and go on to thrive in adulthood. We support the emotional health and wellbeing of both pupils and staff, and take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business in which we all have a role to play.
To fully embed our wellbeing provision we worked towards gaining the Wellbeing Award for Schools in 2018-19. WAS is a nationally recognised award which measures how we, as a school, support all children and staff in their wellbeing and how we also support families to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
We provide several levels of support:
- Universal Support - To positively support all children through our wider curriculum and resources. These include time for every child to visit ‘The Nest’, access to a ‘safe place’ in school and Regulation Stations in every class for children to use to calm and regulate their feelings/responses to situations and hence help themselves.
- Additional support - For those who may have short term needs or who may have been made vulnerable by life experiences such as bereavement.
- Targeted support - For pupils who would benefit from differentiated support or specific targeted interventions such as sensory circuits, Zones of Regulation, wellbeing groups or personalised support plans.
Wellbeing Award for Schools
Evidence demonstrates that good emotional wellbeing is key to learning, attainment and improved academic outcomes which is why KPJA worked towards the accreditation process for the Wellbeing Award in School (WAS) which we have achieved successfully!
This Award has been developed in partnership with the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) to help schools and academies prepare and equip themselves to promote emotional wellbeing and positive mental health across the whole academy community.
